Replacing the word “Tribal” from our Format

The Melbourne Belly Dance Academy is removing the word “Tribal” from its format. If you are active in the belly dance community, you have most likely heard of “Tribal Style” or “Tribal Fusion” or “Tribal”. For those who are new to belly dance and these terms, they have been used to describe an “alternative” style of belly dance to the traditional Egyptian form of this dance. Differences can be seen in the music, costuming, and movement which is either choreographed or improvisation.

In support of a growing movement to change terminology and the greater cause, the academy is removing any references to the word “tribal” and replacing it with “Folkloric Fusion”. According to Wikipedia, the term tribe, or tribal, is used in many different contexts to refer to a category of human social group. This will remove and connotations that may overlap with the definition of indigenous or native tribes that still exist in North America and around the world.

The MBD Academy continually educates ourselves and those who pass through our doors to unite against intolerance and embrace inclusivity. Inclusion is a philosophy that is embraced to welcome and value everyone, regardless of differences, and support of each other. Website and other platforms will be updated as soon as possible.
